Kanbula Geopark

Kanbula Geopark is situated in Jianzha, Zeku Counties and Tongren City, Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China, covering a total area of 3,137 km².


Kanbula Geopark is located on the northeast edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which is a transitional zone between the first and second level stepped geomorphic units in China. The 3 important tectonic unconformities and Indosinian and Yanshanian magmatism record the complex tectonic activities during the geological history in the territory. Moreover, the Triassic Longwuhe marine stratigraphic section of over 6,000 m in thickness could be regarded as a geological textbook of this period. The extremely important geoheritage and geomorphic landscapes such as Longwuxia ultrabasic rock, Danxia landform and Huanghe River landscape have been created in the geological history.


Kanbula Geopark also owns rich historical and ethnic cultural heritage, it is the heart and legitimate birthplace of Tibetan culture. There are 2 items (Regong Art and Huangnan Tibetan Opera) inscribed on the list of the UNESCO human intangible cultural heritage. In addition, there are 10 national level masters of arts and crafts, 4 national key cultural heritage protection sites, 54 national level traditional villages; Tongren city is also rated as the only national level historical and cultural city in Qinghai Province.
