Today marks the first-ever World Glacier Day.
In order to raise awareness of the significant role glaciers play in the climate system and the hydrological cycle, as well as the impacts of their rapid melting, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2022, declaring 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Protection and establishing March 21st of each year as World Glacier Day starting from 2025.
The establishment of this commemorative day aims to enhance public awareness of glacier protection, call on the global community to take action, and address the threats posed by climate change to glaciers and the ecological environment, in order to collectively safeguard the Earth's "white treasures."
The protection of glaciers requires the attention and effort of each and every one of us. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and controlling global warming are at the core of building long-term measures. Let us join hands and take action to protect the Earth's "white treasures" and safeguard this vital "water tower" for future generations.
