The park is located at the first step of the transition from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the Inner Mongolia Plateau, and the transition zone from the Qilian Mountains to the Hexi Corridor. The nine spring snake green rock sets in the west are important material compositions of the oceanic crust nearly 500 million years ago, and truly record the evolution of the ancient Qilian Ocean into the Qilian Mountains; The colorful hills are like colorful silks floating on the Hexi Corridor, and their color is changeable, the shape is peculiar, and the scale is grand, which is one of the world's geological wonders; Zhangye Geopark is the name of the window-shaped - palace-style Danxia; The Heihe River, the second largest inland river in China, runs through the park, nourishing the park's diverse flora and fauna and multi-ethnic residents represented by the Yugur ethnic group; The rich remnants of new structures in front of the Qilian Mountains record the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau over the past 36 million years.
